People who are skilled in logic

This site is for technical and frontier issues in the use of logic, especially in the field of computing. This site is produced by Trevor Oakley. The logicians logo uses symbols of logic. Some alternate symbols are available in the field of logic. I saw a fun little site explaining some of these symbols.

Advanced Displays

Advanced displays are now available at a research level: displays.

Zope Zope: I saw Zope listed in a job ad at hostway.com, and since Hostway is a leading Web company, it got my attention.

The Zope.org sites says:

"Zope is a leading open source application server, specializing in content management, portals, and custom applications. Zope enables teams to collaborate in the creation and management of dynamic web-based business applications such as intranets and portals."

I'll post more when I buy the buy.

Python I have seen several references to Python a programming language, and therefore I have included a link here. I do not know this language, but when I do, I'll post more here.

E-commerce

E-commerce works via a Payment Gateway, and there are a lot on the market. I have added a small list below:

www.btbuynet.com
www.datacash.com
www.netbankx.com
www.secpay.com
www.securetrading.com
www.worldpay.com
www.e-clear.co.uk
www.trintech.com
www.protx.com
www.poptel.net
www.netshopperuk.co.uk
www.epdq.co.uk

I would anyone to be careful in handling e-commerce, and see references at the FTC to Internet fraud. Identity theft is a problem (someone assumes the identity of the cardholder).

I have been a long time customer of hostway.com and amazon.com and therefore I have added their links below.

In Association with Amazon.com

Post any comments at the Logicians Forum. I have just started a newsletter. You can sign up.

I would like any links or mentions you could give logicians.com.

I do freelance work. I am now (Dec. 2, 2001) writing a bot (in Java, but considering C++), and I would like any help in this. Also, I am looking at the possibility of writing a video conferencing program. I expect to use IP-IP calling only, maybe with an interface to HTML (like callto and Netmeeting).

Buying Property via the Internet

Many estate agents now offer images of houses for sale, floor plans, and extensive details all online. There is a fantastic site at ipix.com showing how a camera is used to store 360 degree images.

Cheap houses are sold in Manchester:

Internet News

Web Learning

There is a good introduction site at w3schools.com. I am also developing a site at educiate.com.

Words There are two great sites for words, both offer e-mail daily words: dictionary.com and wordsmith.org.

SVG

SVG is a vector graphic language which represents an image as a series of vectors and therefore it can be indefinitely enlarged. It can be used with Javacript to create animation and Web interaction. SVG is difficult to use because it needs a lot of Javascript coding and has almost no object orientation. It has lost marketplace to Flash and Actionscript which dominates animation and Web interaction.

Kevin Lindsey has a good site explaining some of the basics of SVG. Adobe has a site featuring more text book material on SVG. There is also a mailing list from yahoo which is active.

I have been waiting for SVG books to be published, amazon.com now have four, including one from the friendsofed.com series, which is good teaching material. Friendsofed.com takes a slow and detailed approach which can be too slow sometimes, but its step-by-step approach has a lot of examples, and it can be useful for learning (but not reference).

SMIL

SMIL has made some interesting uses with Flash, and there is now a partnetship with Realnetworks and Macromedia. You can publish SMIL documents from Flash. SMIL still has a way to go to be more interactive. w3.org has more on SMIL.

I have found much good material in the form of books on SMIL. I saw there is a digital book now from amazon.com. I have SMIL for Dummies and the official W3 one, but the material covered in those books is only basic.

XML Feeds

XML Feeds are becoming more useful supplying quotes, headlines, and other information in data object form.

If you need to learn XML, there is an excellent book from O'Reilly entitled: "XML in a Nutshell." I have several O'Reilly books, and they tend to be more for reference, but I found this XML book to be excellent.

VXML

VXML is speech analysis and construction using XML objects. This is a new and interesting area. vxml.org has a mailing list and forum. The main interest from companies is Internet telephoning. IBM is very interested in talking browsers and vxml, IBM has a product called WebSphere. Visit ibm.com and use the search engine there to find out more.

CCXML is one of the latest additions in VXML discussions.

This e-mail is from rj@voxeo.com (RJ Auburn) and it explains something about CCXML.

CCXML is a call control language not a dialog language like VoiceXML. What is the difference you may ask? A dialog language defines the interactions with the user, such as what to speak to the user and what the user can say back. A call control language controls how you get everything connected, and allows you to do complex call control applications such as follow-me/find-me and call center integration but does not deal directly with the interactions with the user. The two languages work well with each other and are designed to complement each other as opposed to compete with each other. You can find the latest VoiceXML specification by going to: http://www.w3.org/Voice/ Currently CCXML is still in development inside the w3c and has not been published. We hope to get a initial draft out soon so keep in touch! Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with, RJ Auburn CCXML Editor -- RJ Auburn Chief Network Architect Voxeo Corporation 100 Enterprise Way Module G3 Scotts Valley, CA 95066 831-461-4963 - Phone 831-439-0883 - Fax

Internet Searches

google.com is probably the most effective search engine, running from thousands of servers in California. Google offers a great feature, which is the "Link To" option. Type in a URL, then click on "Link To" and you get the number of pages linked to that page. This gives an instant impression of how popular a page has become.

Domain Names

Domain names are now big business. Several domain name brokers are buying just about everything and reselling it.

Greatdomains.com has a lot of names for sale.

Management?

I was at Frankfurt airport and I saw a bookstand with a large selection of Dorling Kindersley (www.dk.com) books on management, all pocket size (in price as well). I bought five of these, and found them to be excellent. They cover making decisions, interviews, CV's, and a range of topics. These books are aimed at the British market, and are available from amazon.co.uk (not amazon.com). They are cheaper ar amazon.co.uk than direct from the publishers, which surprised me.

Consumer advice?

cnet.com is an excellent place to get consumer advice.

VRML

There is a lot of interest in Web 3D and VRML. I have seen several examples of Flash and 3D. The only book I could find on this subject is Core Web 3D, which you can buy at amazon.com. It is a dated but the background material is useful, also there is little available.

There is a good web site at vrml.org and also a good mailing list.

There is little progress in this area, but some headway is being made.

3D Images

viewpoint.com offers a great site about a 3D imaging software product. This product is being used in retail of objects such as shoes and handbags: the customer can view the entire object before purchase.

Internet Fun

Yahoo offers video chat, and more. Use the Messenger service and not Java to avoid software problems. The rooms are not monitored, so be careful of anti-social people.

Computer Associations

The ACM is a useful association. The BCS is one in England.

British Computer Jobs

A good site, especially for freelance work is jobserve.com.

Hosts

This site is hosted at hostway.com. The company offers mySQL, Multimedia and a range of service. The prices are good. It is recommended by CNET.

Bankrupt dotcoms

There is a site listing dotcoms which are now bankrupt.

Virus Protection

There is a good anti-virus site. There is a site listing a large number of known viruses.

Bots

Bots, robots, spiders, agents are advanced programs travelling about the Internet collecting data. They collect data for search engines. Google.com is accredited with developing very advanced bots, enabling google.com to be one of the best search engines. Visit Zillman's site to find out more about bots.

FIPA-OS and JATLite provide an agent toolkits.

Spider Resources

spider 1.

Spider 2.

Cloaking

Cloaking is the means by which a site is presented differently to a spider than to a browser.

Cloaking.

IRC bots operate in chat rooms, and the like. YAHOO uses a lot of these. When I last visited chat.yahoo.com I saw a lot of bots, some were even with videos, so people think they are talking to someone and seeing someone. Actually, they are talking to software and seeing a video.

If you think you are talking to a bot, ask something only a person can answer, or ask for a wave on a video. These bots can be very intelligent, and it can be difficult to know if there is a person there or not.

Video Conferencing

This technique is old now, but CUSeeMe and Netmeeting (not developed) are still used. Both allow real time video chat.

Internet Animation There is a good site at http://www.animfactory.com/
